McDs Week Three Recap

The cream is starting to rise to the top in our High School competitions

We’re almost a quarter of the way through the McDonald’s Thomson and Whelan Seasons, and are starting to see the contenders separate themselves from pretenders.

Avonside looks like they will again be competing for the Whelan Division II title this year, after another big win. This time over Marian College 106-42. Megan Shannon was unstoppable with 25p, and had three other players join her in double figures for the Lady Eagles (Bella Digby 17p; Daisy Shrimpton 15p; Brooklyn Pouwhare 10p). Mckenzie Hansen led the charge for Marian with 18p, but lacked enough support.

Middleton Grange hosted St. Andrew’s, and managed an upset win after the Gators built a 30-23 half-time lead. Katie Jo Van den Bogaert had 23p, Annabel Lapworth 13p, Sofia Kennedy 11p and Fia Lai Kong 10p for MG. To be fair for St. Andrew’s, they were missing their leading scorer, Charlotte Whittaker, from the active roster so will feel confident going forward. Billie Watson (17p) and Milly Nesbit (15p) were the leading scorers for the vistors. The win allows Middleton Grange to retain the Phil Burns Cup for at least another week after a 63-54 win.

Middleton Grange and St. Andrew’s also matched up in the Thomson Trophy, and the Gators again had an upset win – this time by a much larger 89-58 margin. NZ U17 Representatives Mac Stoddard (21p) and Sam Jenkins (16p) had solid offensive showings (including two big dunks from Stoddard – see our plays of the week video!) but struggled to contain the well-oiled Gators side. Ben Carlile-Smith (25p) answered with his own big dunk, and Jarred Burnett (25p) and Ah Li Fenika (18p) also scored well for the Gators.

Cashmere retained the Dowson Cup with a tight 73-62 win over Shirley, while Christ’s College had an extremely close 75-70 win over Hillmorton in the Thomson Game of the Week.
