Macca’s Week Nine Update

After a nice (relaxing?) holiday break – the McDonald’s Thomson and Whelan Trophy Competitions are back in action tonight

All four divisions tip off in tonight (Tuesday 30 July 2019), with a full slate of 19 games taking place across Canterbury – with finals night set for August 27, it is getting very, very close to make or break time for teams with designs on doing well in the playoffs.

Double Headers for July 2 (5:15pm and 7:00pm):

  • Cashmere High’s girls play against Riccarton, and then the #1 seeded boys play #2 Middleton Grange (expect a big crowd for this – our Game of the Week, and also a Dowson Cup challenge!)
  • Kaiapoi High is favoured in both their girls’ matchup vs St. Margaret’s, and then the boys against Hornby
  • Avonside will be hard pressed to get a win vs the Middleton Grange Gators, and then the Shirley Boys’ Spartans will face a Christ’s College team expected to be at full strength
  • The St. Andrew’s College girls have a chance to reclaim the Phil burns Cup from Christchurch Girls’ (Our Whelan game of the Week), and then the boys will face a hungry Saints team from St. Thomas

In one of the few home games for Papanui, they will be hosting the Thomson Trophy team from e Pā o Rākaihautū at 4:30pm at the Graham Condon Centre

5:15pm Single games tonight:

  • Hornby Girls host the Burnside team
  • The Lincoln High School Whelan team has the Papanui girls team traveling to them
  • Linwood College (temporarily based at the old Avonside Girls’ School site) has Riccarton High’s Thomson Trophy team
  • Rangi Ruru has Ashburton College visiting
  • Villa Maria hosts last season’s Division II Champions Ellesmere College

We also have some single game action tipping off at at 7:00pm

  • Burnside High hosts Christchurch Boys’ High, with each team being desperate for a win to start turning around a disappointing season
  • Cathedral College plays against Lincoln High’s boys
  • Hagley College and Haeata play in their first ever matchup in the Thomson Trophy
  • Rangiora High will host the Ashburton College boys
  • St. Bede’s College will guarantee making the playoffs if they can take care of Hillmorton’s boys tonight
