Special Referee Clinic

Basketball Victoria Country’s Referee Development Officer is briefly here and will run a special development session

We are very lucky to have Karin Berry-Smith who is back home in Christchurch to run a session on conflict management, game control. She will also be covering how to make the step to get to the next level.

Here’s a little blurb about Karin who was a huge part of Canterbury basketball before moving over to Australia.

Karin Berrysmith:
2008 Canberra as Basketball ACT Referee Manager; 2014 Referee Officer for Basketball Victoria Country responsible for 106 associations referee programs.

“I ref coach anything from green shirt beginners up to and including National Leagues, National Junior Championships and of course the Victorian State Champs. I recruit, roster and manage all referee details for 10 regional events a year. I have been lucky to have worked with FIBA Oceania at a couple of their events as a referee educator.

“I still maintain contact with referee groups in NZ and assist them with resources and suggestions for their education plans. I have worked in Australia now for 11 years and what I love in the role is the same from when I was working for Canterbury Basketball. The people are what makes the job, seeing a youngster develop from a beginner and gain skills and confidence is incredibly rewarding. It takes five years to grow a referee from that beginner up to a club premier division official and I have been very fortunate to see that on many occasions. I don’t care if they’re a green shirt or an NBL ref, I enjoy every level.”

Karin will be running her clinic on Tuesday 23rd April, 6pm-8pm at the Canterbury softball centre (upstairs) next to Cowles stadium. Please RSVP for numbers. Event will be posted on ‘CBA referees’ page also.
