Wildcats Worldwide – Late November ’18

Get updates on how and what our Alloyfold Canterbury Wildcats have been up to around the globe

Many thanks to Mike Lacey for penning the following article (he does far more so make sure to head to his site which covers all of NZ!). Follow the Wildcats on facebook to get these as updates (and more) as soon as they are published too.

Congratulations to our very own Terai Sadler who played a major role for the Cook Islands team that won the Polynesian Cup in Apia last weekend. The Cook Islands romped away with the final beating Tahiti 91-58. In the gold medal game Terai, later named to the All-Star Five, snared 13 rebounds including six offensive boards. “We didn’t know what to expect coming here, so to come away with the Gold is awesome” said Terai. The victory also helped secure the Cook Islands a place in the 2019 Pacific games tournament.

It may have been Thanksgiving Weekend in the States but it was no holiday for our college players. At the Gulf Coast Showcase Tournament in Florida, The Fordham University Rams finished runners-up to Texas going down 72-54 in
the final with Mary Goulding netting 9 points. Mary has averaged an impressive 10.4 points and 7.7 rebounds across the opening seven games for Fordham Women’s Basketball. Next up for Fordham is a tough trip to Georgetown University on Friday.

Lincoln University Scholars Connie Polettit and Ajiah Pepe competed in the World University League 3×3 Competition in Xiamen, China. LU finished up improving on their 2017 placing, gaining 10th. The team was extremely competitive, losing to last years champions (third place team in 2018) in their playoff game, and pushing their Hungarian opponents to overtime in their opening match (whose final standing was 7th). Ajiah also blitzed through the field to qualify first in the Three-point Shootout qualifying round, but Slovenian Maja Jakobcic was unconscious as she left no chance for anyone to beat her in the final.

Amiee Book continued her good work for Cal State Fullerton Women’s Basketball. The Tigers went down 83-74 against Portland but Amiee still managed 13 points converting three from seven from beyond the arc. Another Middleton Grange and Wildcats alumni Lauryn Hippolite top-scored for Hawaii Pacific University Women’s Basketball in the 82-67 loss to Canada’s Simon Fraser University in Anchorage. Lauryn also grabbed 5 rebounds in the game. Next up for Lauryn and the Sharks is the opening game of PacWest Conference later in the week when they will face local rivals Hawaii Hilo.

Over in the professional ranks Toni Edmondson dished a game high six assists as the Perth Lynx thrashed Sydney University Flames 113-67 in the latest round of Australian Women’s National Basketball League action. Toni added 11 points and 3 rebounds to help Perth remain top of the WNBL ladder with a 7-2 record.

Tessa Boagni is playing in the Malaysian Women’s Basketball League. Her team boast a 7-1 record after demolishing bottom of the table Rever 95-23 at the weekend.
